SPRING SHOW REPORT 2006

AS PUBLISHED IN ALPACA HMMM... SPRING 2006

Well, the Spring show has come and gone with a change of venue and a change in date to allow an alpaca display to be held in conjunction with FloraFest between 7 and 10 September 2006 at Mt Penang. The show was earlier then planned due to conflicting dates with the National Conference in Adelaide, changes to the date of Hawkesbury Blue Mountains Spring Show and other alpaca related events in NSW and venue availability. Wyong Racecourse was chosen as it offered a large area undercover for penning of the alpacas and an open grassed area for judging, with the added benefit of additional area undercover for judging if required due to weather constraints.

Ron Reid from Swan Valley Alpacas Western Australia accepted our offer to judge the show.

A total of 149 entries were received comprising 23 Suri and 126 Huacaya, but unfortunately due to the continual rain along the coast of NSW leading up to the show a total of 22 withdrawals occurred (however the entry level was still greater than last year and there is room for further expansion).

Fortunately rain stayed away for most of the day and we were able to judge in the open air for some of the time. The undercover area for judging while reasonable would benefit from additional lighting if the venue is used again.

The Supreme Champion Suri was won by Paul & Deanne Thibault, El Prado Alpacas with El Prado Cortez, a 10 month old white male. The Supreme Champion Huacaya was won by Pat & Rosa Visconti, Jolimont Alpacas (exhibited by Peter & Narelle Tulip, Hunter Valley Alpacas) with Jolimont Reagan, a 79 month old white male. Full results are available elsewhere on the website and in the Newsletter.

I would also like to express my thanks to all involved in the set up of the pens and assistance in the conduct of the show:
N & R Thomson, M & P Kinloch, P & N Tulip, N Reid, J, B & A Ross, E Thrift, P Thibault, C Vella, H Tanner, S Roberts, a special thank you to Peter King our Chief Steward (Peter is a former regional member who now lives down near Crookwell but agreed to come up to do this role), our local Vet Chris Rayson who conduct a JDMAP audit for the site and undertook alpaca inspection prior to the show. A special mention is also given to Alan Gilmour, Werona Park Alpacas who picked up the judge from Sydney airport on Friday afternoon and braved the foul weather and F3 traffic to bring the judge to his motel on the Central Coast and to the Ross family who brought the judge to the show on Saturday morning.

Also a huge thank you to all exhibitors who pitched in to pull down the pens and clean up the straw which needed to be done after the show due to another function at the venue latter that night. A small group of members had an enjoyable dinner with the judge on Saturday night after the show.

I would also ask that in future any exhibitors that intend to bring in alpacas the night before the show advise the convenor that this is their intention, while most did, there were a couple that did not. In conjunction with this I would also like to thank Maureen Carey who stayed at the venue on Friday night to assist in security for the alpacas.

I trust all exhibitors enjoyed themselves and approved of the venue, even if they could not all receive championship ribbons. I hope you are able to attend next years show and hope the show can continue to grow in stature.

Show Convenor
